When I begin a painting, I have a lot of ideas in mind but no preconceived plan to an end result. I try to let the painting proceed as it wants. This process can take days or weeks or even months.

I use various materials in my work such as oil paint, graphite, colored pencils, torn canvas, cardboard and paper so that I keep the boundaries of the painting process as open as possible. This allows me to experiment as the painting develops.

I work in an abstract style which allows the viewer to interpret what they see based on their own memories and emotions. Layers of color, lines, shapes and texture impart a tension that exists on and beneath the surface of the work. Areas of paint are scraped and modified to reveal the paintings essence. My goal is for the work to have a compositional rhythm that builds in interest with repeated viewings.

I have a scientific background in chemistry and geology and this greatly influences my art. As a teenager, I enjoyed science and art. I chose to pursue a degree in science but art has always been a part of me too. I think art and science share a commonality in that they both require precise physical observations and an abstract understanding along with curiosity and exploration. My home is in Bloomington, Indiana. It is located in an area surrounded by rock formations and quarries which have an influence on my art as well. In addition, living in a college town offers me inspiration with all the energy and diversity of ideas. I have paintings in private and public collections. A list of past exhibits and accomplishments can be found on my events page.
